Thank you for a wonderful book and for giving me another author whose work I will probably devour. I look forward to searching out your past works and anticipating the future.

It's particularly unusual for me since I've avoided Regencies and historicals for the last few years -- like the plague. I was strictly Ms. Contemporary Romance, but I'm eager now to find your other books. And I can't wait for Ferdinand's story! Do you have a publication date? I loved your storytelling, the dialogue, the characters, the sex. Jane and Jocelyn are wonderful! He is such a snob. She is such a smart-mouth (him, too). He is so vulnerable. She is so smart. What a combination! "Oh, is that you, your grace? I had quite forgotten you were here." "... I so rarely have the opportunity to take tea with a former employee." ZING! I'm a voracious reader but it's been a long time since I enjoyed a book as much as I enjoyed "More Than a Mistress." Thank you for a great read, and a great deal of reading pleasure. I do enjoy your books tremendously, and I wish the National Library Service for the Blind recorded more of them. In September, I had read the Gilded Web, only to find out that there were two books attached to it. The two books, of course, are out of print, and so, I am left not knowing what happened to the characdters. I was wondering how one can obtain those books. The NLS told me they did not record out of print books, so I am wondering if your books will be reprinted in the near future, or if there is a way to get a hold of the two books so that I can scan and read them. I would really like to know what happened. I think it's a shame that the books are out of print. You do write such wonderful books! I can't wait for the day that books can be bought and downloaded off of the Internet. That way, I can read them using my talking computer and be happy as a clam before it gets out of the water and into the frying pan! Thank you for reading this message, and I do truly hope that the guest book does not become rabbid again and eat up my message for breakfast.

I too have had difficulty finding your older titles, and I'm very happy to hear that Bantam Dell is looking at them. With the amount of junk published monthly, you'd think Dell would be smart to put out something that there is an assured market for. Is there a specific person at Dell you would suggest I contact to let them know how I feel? Thanks again - Lisa.

I think their story would make a good prequel. What I like most about your books are how distinctive your characters are. Most romance authors vary their plots, but their male and female leads are interchangable from one book to the next. I also like the very strong period sensibility in your books. I like historicals because I want to read about other times and sensibilities. I don't want to read about a 21st century person in the 19th century--if I did I would read contemporary novels. Keep it up! Sincerely, Michele

I just wanted you to know how wonderful I find your stories. Someday, I hope to collect them all. I was reading through the reviews on Amazon, and was surprised to see a few negative ones. (Did they read the same book I did???). Anyway, I wrote a five star review for you (under the title "Romance Readers Rejoice") and I wanted to thank you personally for not abandoning the romance genre and your romance readers. When I heard that you were coming out with a hardback, I groaned out loud. It seems that almost all of the finest romance writers abandon the romance genre as soon as they make it in hardback, and switch to murder/mystery/suspense. It's almost as if romance isn't prestigious enough for hardback. I find this extremely frustrating-- shouldn't love be more prestigious than murder and violence?! I greatly admire your writing and its unfailing emotional intensity, and have been an avid fan since your very first book. I wait impatiently for Ferdinand's story, and I would love to hear more about the sexy Viscount Kimble as well!! For regency, Jane Austin, Georgette Heyer are, of course, cited. When the modern writers are mentioned, Mary Balogh is often proposed as the best of the current writers in the historical/regency genre. And the reaction is ALWAYS enthusiastic agreement. Thank you for your work.

The genre is one of my favorites but your character development and smooth writing style really sets your books apart from the pack. I am constantly amazed and impressed with the way you can make me hate someone in one book then turn it around and have me sympathizing with them in the next - and in less then 250 pages or so. Congratulations on your first Hardcover. I'm sure it won't disappoint. Any smaller Regencies on the your Horizon?

I actually started working part time there because my husband said I should just get paid for all the hours I spent there. I have done a lot with the romance area, enlarged it, created permanent displays, made their presence known on the mass market table and we have seen great results so far. My Romance Book Club has gone better then anyone had expected with 12 members and 8 regulars. Now here I am today writing to you in search of some advice and perhaps assistance. Just for the record, my sister in law got mem hooked on your books years ago. I have been a fan for quite a while and Silent Melody put you over the top for me. You are a fabulous writer who has afforded me many hours of enjoyment. I thank you! Now for that dreadful business stuff. My latest and biggest project is our upcoming Romance Fair. It is October 14th and we have a fun day planned with signings, author panel, tarot card reader, knights fencing, costume contest, glorious pastries, etc. I would love any suggestions or advice you might have on what works and what doesn't with these events. I will admit to being a bit of a newbie, only a year of bookselling and this is the first big romance event (but not the last). I have the drive, I just need a bit of directional assistance sometimes. We are also planning a raffle of autographed book baskets with proceeds to go to two charities near and dear to me, Primary Children's Medical Center, their language and literacy development program and the YWCA Battered Women's Shelter. I love this idea but I am having a problem getting moving on it as I'm not real sure where to go from concept to actuality. We would like to do 5 big baskets, 4 for the raffle and one for a teacher on Teacher Appreciation Day the following weekend. We will include coffee, mugs, chocolates and whatever other fun things we can throw in. The raffle will start September 9th, with the drawing at the Romance Fair. But now how do I get lots of authors to help me out with their autographed books? Do I ask them to donate outright as many as they can afford to? Do I offer them postage paid mailers? We will of course include the authors who donate on our promotional materials and such as well as a display of all those who donated that will be up for the month. Keep in mind you are on my dream list. If you are ever in the area I would love to host a signing for you. You just need let me know what I need to do and I'll set it all up :-) Lastly, for now anyway. If you have a promotional type mailing list would you add me to it? PLEASE. I have had a time getting promotional materials, authors of course have been great but I just don't have time to contact everyone. If you would include me on your list it would be most appreciated. The address and information is below. We have a couple other fun things going on including a mailing list and monthly romance newsletter. I am having the time of my life with all of this. I realize how very busy you are and completely understand if you are unable to take the time to respond, I will not be offended in the least. If you are able to take a few moments I will be profoundly grateful. All my best! Gail Stordahl-Brown Borders Books & Music 132 E. Winchester Murray, UT 84107 e-mail: Corp01@aol.com

I can assure that I will be reading more of Mary Balogh's books. My favorite book of all time is Indiscreet. Where do you come up with the ideas for your stories?

"Rake's Mistress" is listed under your name, was published May 2000 by Bantam Dell. ISBN is 0440226015. Is this one of yours? I can't find it anywhere else. Thank you for all the hours of pleasure you've given your readers. I only regret that we won't see any more of your Signet Christmas books. You have been an autobuy for me almost from the begining of your career. My only problem has been finding them as they came out since this is not the most Regency-friendly town around. I have recently talked two of my e-mail friends into trying your books and one is already hooked. I am having a ball trying to find some of the older books for her. The other friend has a couple of your books but she doesn't have the related books and won't start these until she does. She has asked what my favorite book is and there is no way I can decide that. I love almost all of them and those that I don't love I still like. I am looking forward to your new book in September. Thank you for all the years of wonderful reading. Paula

Today I have all your books except one, and half the antologies. I love all the Christmas stories, large or short and between my favorites are "The Notorious Rake", "Lord Carew´s Bride", "Dancing with Clara", "A precious Jewel", "Heartless", "the Gentle Conquest"; well I like all of them. There is one place that I can recommend where I found many of them, even some of the difficult ones at a fair price: rereadables.com . I am now impatiently waiting for the new one to be released, but I have a question, I believed that it will be Lauren story, now I see that the heroine name is Jane. You are going to give Lauren her own book, aren´t you?. Of course, I don´t need to say that all your books are keepers for me. I always love regencies, and before finding you, I was a little disapointed with most of the ones I get (In the anthologies I picked because of your name, now I found some other authors I like, but your stories are the best of all).

She was such a strong, vital character and you left her hanging. She did not submit to fate graciously, nor did she rebel. I realize that you have left a convenient opening for another novel, but I am dying here. I rarely take any time out anymore for reading other peoples work, my own seems to absorb my every thought. But your storytelling ability kept my imagination piqued beyond the norm. Some months (a year or so?) back I read that some of your earlier books were to be re-printed abroad if not in the US. I would love to know where and when - and how someone in the States could get in contact with a bookseller that would sell them via mailorder? Everyone needs a little romance in their lives is my motto - but the time limits placed on my reading time by work and family responsibilities have taught me to read very few books "cold." I go first to my favorite authors and then to those recommended by friends whose taste seems similar to my own... I have read and re-read your novels (when in doubt or when I know I have only limited time, I would rather re-read an old favorite than experiment with a totally unfamiliar author!) but, unfortunately I did not discover you until several of your earliest books were no longer available. (Even worse than not finding some of your books at all is checking out some of those out-of-print books from a library, falling in love with a set of characters and then discovering that some unscrupulous person has stolen that copy when I try to go back to re-read it!) I look forward to your new releases and am so pleased for you that you will be published in hardback editions - although I enjoy the convenience of paperbacks, I also love the feel and permanence of hardbacks. Besides, I take it as a sign that your work is being taken more seriously - as well it should.

| Wrote... Hello, Mary. I have been a fan so long I believe I may have purchased your very first copy ever sold! Maybe not...Needless to say, I have been enjoying your stories for a long time. I have read over some of your messages and felt compelled to add my two cents worth...I am sure you get "guidance" all the time! I am not a supporter of the re-written previously published stories. This is especially true with your stories for I think you put alot of effort in perfecting the stories the first time published. Usually, I find the rewritten sections of the re-released stories drag along rather than add to the flow....(That sounds more like a dime's worth rather than 2 cents!) One other thing: I am intrigued with how you can take a not-so-likable character in one story and make them a hero/heroine to sympathize with and even like in another story. My favorite of these is Lord Edmond Waite. I was just wondering if you could possibly pull off a story about Lady Dorothea Page which make us feel sympathy for her without jeopardizing our new-found sympathy for Lord Edmond? I look forward to your next book! PS - I am a speech therapist by training. I am impressed with how you portray characters with difficulties physically and verbally. Even Sir Gerald Stapleton's difficulty with reading and numbers was well-scripted. It must be your years in the schools! | |

I just checked to see if they have "Rake's Mistress" set up yet for June sales, and instead I saw "More Than A Mistress," with a release date of September 12, 2000. Is this the same book? Why is it being delayed? I'm in dire need of a new Balogh fix!

You are able to pull off extremely delicate situations with such finesse and panache. Furthermore, some of your plots have very contraversial issues. And I love your books simply because you deal with them. I admit that not all cater to my taste but then that makes your books even more precious. But most of all I love your sense of humour. Finally, I would like to make a little request. I would love you to autograph some of my books. I have most of them and in some cases extra copies. One thing I especially like about your books is that they are so eminently re-readable....and I re-read them constantly, and wouldn't part with one of them for ANY price. Hope you are busy producing another of your longer novels. I'd be hard pressed to name a favorite, but two I especially liked are HEARTLESS and BEYOND THE SUNRISE. I'll be watching and waiting for your next work.

| Wrote... Dear Mary, You're my favorite author in any genre. As with many of your fans, I started reading Georgette Heyer in junior high and got hooked on Regencies. I'm only sorry that I didn't discover you until about 1990 so I have the usual problem of trying to fill in the earlier titles in my collection. My husband knows that if my nose is in one of your books, I'm not to be disturbed! I was wondering if you've ever read Heyer's "Beauvallet" (my favorite) and if you've ever considered doing an Elizabethan historical. I have to admit to a weakness for a hero who can buckle a swash... I think what I appreciate most about your work is the variety. Too many romance novelists (even some I really enjoy) write the same plots over and over again or reuse the same devices in different settings. You obviously work very hard to be fresh and as a result I find your characters individually memorable. Not having read all of your work yet, I can't give my final opinion, but I have particularly enjoyed "Dark Angel", "Longing", "The Trysting Place" and "The Notorious Rake". You do a really first rate job of giving your characters rational motivations. I really dislike a story where the whole conflict between the hero and heroine could be resolved by one simple conversation. Your work is always a pleasure to read (and reread). If at some point you do plan to reissue any of your early novels, you can count on my buying every one. Best Regards, Katie | |

| Wrote... I grew up reading Regencies and while I may write paranormal romances, the Regency has remained one of my favorite romance genres to read. When Zebra moved away from the larger format back to the short Regency I was disappointed, then I found your books! I'm an avid reader, and support my hobby by working a second job in my local Waldenbooks, but I find that even today there are only a small number of romance writers I can enjoy with any regularity. I'm pleased to say that you have been added to that group, and I'm looking forward to your next book. | |

I belong to a local writer's group who will be putting on another writer's retreat this fall. I was wondering if you do any workshops. We would love to have you join us to do one or two workshops on September 29, 30 and October 1, 2000 at Apex Ski Resort just outside of Penticton British Columbia. We are trying to find as many Canadian authors and people in the publishing business. We would provide you with accommodations, a chance to sell your numerous books, and a small honorarium. The scenery is breathtaking, but we won't be able to ski just yet. We look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience. Thank you for considering our request. I can't wait for your next book. Love, a die hard fan, Penny Smith Co-Founder Penticton Writers and Publishers Phone/Fax (250) 493-0825 161 Wilton Cres., Penticton, B.C., V2A 3A3.

Have read so many of your books and still trying to find some on the Internet - Auctions and Z-Shops etc. Are yougoing to re-issue some of the very popular early ones - now selling for up to $90! And hopefully not true what I read in the other letters fromm readers, that you are not going o be writing any more Regency Romances for Signet? And I also see that your next book is The Rake's Mistress in June ? I love reading your books - but being Scottish could you hve some Scottish heros too. Keep up the good work.

| Wrote... How heartwarming to read on your website of the many others who have received as much pleasure from your books as I have. One person referred to you as a "word- smith". Another spoke of "your awesome gift". Mary Balogh, you are a teller of tales par excellence. We are all drawn into the magic of these stories by a master weaver of words. Your power is such that while reading your books, we are truly, for those moments, in another time and place, totally outside of our- selves. We all thank you for the joy, the wonder, and the romance with which your books fill our lives. | |

| Wrote... Ms. Balogh, thank you for writing such wonderful stories. You are one of my favourite romance authors, and among regencies, the favourite. Your books are very sweet, and always leaves me with a huge sigh of content. THe characters are very believable, especially for the time-period, doing the things they probably did, not be outrageous and be accepted. Please keep writing proliferously as I always wait with baited breath, scanning the bookshelves for your newest novel! Thank you for the many wonderful hours (more like weeks, months, years!!) of great time through your stories!!!! | |

| Wrote... I think the reason I admire your books most is that you are the only writer I can think of who uses sex scenes correctly -- to show us things about the characters' minds and hearts that we couldn't have learned any other way. Many romances I've read wouldn't suffer a bit storywise if someone pushed the delete key on all the sex scenes. What you do is different and it must be difficult because nobody else does it so well! Another reason I admire you is because you said you couldn't get through Moby Dick either :) | |

Thank You for years of reading pleasure and for the hours spent with heroes and heroines who faced challenges with calm and strength and who developed solutions based on fairness, honesty and abundant love. It is pleasure to read about your people rather than spend time with strident, self centered characters who do not listen to each other and make matters worse because of their belligerence and anger. Again, Thank You!

| Wrote... Enjoy your work immensely! I find your characters interesting, complex and your books addictive. Usually I need a supply of kleenx at hand when I start reading one. I have all your books except for two: "The Wood Nymph" and "Gentle Conquest." The rest I have read or am in the process of reading. I will really miss your Signet Regencies. I especially enjoyed the series "Courting Julia", "Dancing with Clara" and "Tempting Harriet." Also among my favorites are: "An Unacceptable Offer" "Snow Angel," "The Counterfeit Betrothal", and "A Promise of Spring" (which I will now have to reread as I have the rest of the series finally!) I really hope that your previous work will be re-released so others who are just discovering you can enjoy your older work. Also it doesn't seem fair that they are going for such high prices on the used book Internet sites but you don't receive the benefit. All the best on your next project! | |
