I first encountered the regency romance novel by coming across a huge stack of Barbara Cartland at a used bookstore. The next thing I read was "Lord Carew's Bride" which, in a comedy of errors over a east coast to Hawaii flight, I read over four times at the first reading. Since then, you have been, bar none, my favorite regency author. Thanks for so much pleasure!

I have never been a big reader, I recently took the kids to the library. I have a 10 year old and a 4 year old, my 10 year old has been fighting leukemia for 5 years, I wish I had begun to read your books along time ago, the times just flies while I am into a book. The first book was I believe it is called The Christmas wish, or something like that. After I finished it, I ran back to the library to grab anything with your name on it. My friend (English teacher) told me Oh get Jane Austen, you will love it. I did pick up Jane Austen at the library and two of your books as well. I so enjoy your writing. It makes me want to see a bunch of movies made from your books. Has there ever been a book made into a movie? My eyes get tired, once I start reading I just can not put the book down, I was up til 2 am waiting to see If Lord Ashley would Marry Miss Emily, Emma, how you made her come alive with out a voice. EXCELLENT

You're the only author whose books I repeatedly reread. I always buy your new titles as soon as they hit the shelves, and I love them, but I have to admit that I have a true fondness for your Signets (and yes, I understand why you don't write them anymore, but I still grieve at the loss). Any chance that your Signets will be rereleased? I have all but two of them, and they are impossible to find (well, almost--I think my husband would be very unhappy if I spent $40-$80 for a used book). I would love to get my hands on those copies and I know I'm not alone. Let's face it, there's a reason why they're so expensive and that reason is demand. Looking forward eagerly to your next book. Dear Mary, I just heard that one of my three favorite modern historical romance authors, Dame Dorothy Dunnett, passed away in November. You, she, Georgette Heyer have defined my standards for high quality in historical romance. Dorothy's delicately labyrinthine plotting and superb characterizations raised the bar for the genre in ways that challenged and rewarded us all. Please keep yourself healthy, well and productive--we readers are terribly selfish and would confer immortality on our favorite authors, chaining you to your desks forever, if we could. Warmly,

Hi Ms. Balogh! I would just like to say, I LOVE YOUR BOOKS! I started off slow - the first book I read of yours, I think it was Irresistable, was ok - I could take it or leave it. But later (a year or so) I picked up another book by you, LOVED it, and I was off. (I eventually reread Irresistable, and found it good. Some books just change like that for me. Same thing happened for me and Linda Howard's Son of the Morning, except I hated it first time, but loved it second...) I think you have one of the most authentic Regency "voices" I've read, and I've read many Regencies and Regency historicals! I have read all the books I can get my hands on by you, but since you have such an extensive backlist...oh well, I'm young yet, I'll get to all of them eventually! :) Thanks a lot for writing such wonderful books, and I hope you will not stop writing for many years to come. I am currently in college (I think I "discovered" you early in high school) and your books are excellent stress-relievers when studying for finals (which I am doing right now, btw), etc. I hope to study computer science, and I don't think many of my peers read romances...their loss! but then, I don't know any guys, period, who read romances...which is sad. ok, thanks a lot, I would love a reply (you're only the second author I've ever written to, the other is Joan Wolf, another great writer) bye! have a grrrreeeaattt day! :D

I work in the library at my college, and happened to be discharging two of your books. Always on the lookout for a new Regency Romance author (I'm picky, I guess, and have only found a few so far that I adore enough to buy all of their books), I checked out 'More Than a Mistress' and finished it that night. Of course, 'No Man's Mistress' followed, and I came to the sad conclusion that those were the only two you had written considering our huge library doesnt have any more of your books and those two were new. I am absolutely ecstatic to find out you have written many more, and will definitely be at the bookstore this evening to purchase as many more as I can find!!! Thank you for the fantastic stories :)

iam so delighted to have found your website. I have been collecting Mary Balogh books for years and still do not have a complete collection. But I'm still trying. I also am a history buff and in a recent course re Napoleon vs Wellington, we were asked what we knew about that era. I (and others in the class who also read Regency stories) referred to some of the costumes you describe and the rules that described the mores of the society of that day. The professor was fascinated - or so he said - so I gave him your name as the best of the lot. My husband and I on one of our trips to London would go to the different museums, and one of favorites was certainly the VandA Museum, as it was fascinating to see some of the actual costumes and carriages, etc. used in the early 19th century. I hope to keep in touch with you and do thank you for your marvelous writing, and your excellent research and reference work. Katherine Blanchet kblanchet94@aol.com

By the way, I am Dr. Martin, a psychologist, and I adored the fact that I had to look up many of the words in your book! What a mental challenge. Dear Mary: Slowly but surely my Mary Balogh collection is nearing completion. I just recently finished the four horsemen series and humbly join those wishing to see these friends and their families again. Their interaction was great: "Rex was asking in feigned disgust if that was a wound at the corner of Nat's mouth or merely a cold sore." I'll settle for an unpublished epilogue to Irresistible. Please? Thank you for directing me to Recordedbooks.com where I was able to get the audio version of More Than a Mistress. I'll admit thinking the narrator's delivery was too slow. Is there still hope that you will be narrating No Man's Mistress yourself? I wish there were audio versions of your short regencies, too. An Unlikely Duchess would be a good choice, hilarious! Thanks so much for creating such wonderful characters. I'm looking forward to your next book! Mary Frances Graham bigblueY2k@hotmail.com

Dear Ms. Balogh, I've been a fan of yours since reading "The Double Wager" in 1986. At the time I was writing what would become my first book, and part of the plot was similar. "I could never do this!" I thought. "She's already done it and she's done it twice as well." You have since become both my model as a writer, as well as my despair. I try to live up to your work, and I usually fail. I don't know if you remember me, but you may after I tell you this story. I met you at the New England Chapter conference a few years ago. I was the one who bought practically all your books and then spent the time while you kindly autographed them talking with Barbara Keiler, sitting next to you. The truth is, I was shy. I tend to get starstruck at conferences, and, let's be honest - I always make a fool of myself one way or another at a NEC conference. (This year I tripped over Leslie Wainger in my haste to get to the dessert table). I have felt badly about the incident ever since, and have wanted to apologize. I can tell you that I parcelled those books out very carefully, so that I wouldn't run out of them too quickly. I have most, if not all, of your books, and am at the point where I have to reread them. They still can keep me reading, though. In the past few weeks I have reread "Longing", which originally held me spellbound while I was on vacation in Fort Lauderdale a few years ago - not an easy thing to do, I think you'll agree. I think it's the favorite of your books. (tell me this - after reading the whipping scene, I've been wondering. Why are wet whips so much worse than dry ones? You never did explain that). As someone else in your guestbook wrote, I like it that you'll tackle the dark subjects. I tend to like darker books, and have not been thrilled with a lot of the newer books, which are just plain silly and have no depth. I cannot fathom why some of these books end up being huge sellers, and people's favorites. Even a funny book needs emotion. I loved the heroine in "The Famous Heroine". She was so much more realistic than so many of the characters in books, and yet the book was funny. I read "Christmas Beau" this past week, and finished "The Last Waltz" last night. I'll be reading the Christmas anthologies soon; my favorite story is "The Best Christmas Ever". I can't read it without crying. I've used it a couple of times in workshops to illustrate how to get depth in a work of fiction. The first time I did this, I got so choked up at the part where Anna started talking that I had to hand the book off to someone else to read. By the end of the workshop, I had half the group in tears. One woman, who was pregnant, came up to me afterwards and told me that that wasn't fair! I've also recently reread "Precious Rogue", for the fourth time in about two months. That's something I've never done with any novel or novella. I was so enchanted with it the first time that I picked it up again within a few days. Etc., etc. I do wish I could recapture the magic of a first reading, where I didn't know what was going to happen. This has been a long note, and I know I am gushing. It's just that so much of your work is so good. I don't know how you do it. Actually, I don't care - just keep on doing it! I look forward to all your books. All the best, Mary Kruger

I do not really like regency books, but somehow I stumbled (?) over One Night for Love" I was drawn to it from the first page. It is always hard to deal with rape. I was simply shocked by the fate of your hero. But amazed who you let her deal and cope with it. In a sensible way. Well its not easy to describe my thoughts about that book. I only can say, I am/was sad about the heros fate but I admire her for her soul, her ability to deal with the bad things in life.

Dear Mary, Having obtained many of your earlier books through my wonderful local library's inter-library loan, I feel I really know your work! I've recently enjoyed Snow Angel! What a fun romance! I was wondering if I noticed, after reading many of your books and a few of hers, whether Barbara Hazard and you share a few underlying themes? I thought I detected a few similarities in some plot details. Of course, I am Not saying that there is a lack in either authoress! Barbara Hazard is probably my second favorite Regency writer after you! Do you have any other authors you recommend? Also thought I'd tell you I have a hard time picturing some of your heroines...I have never known anyone with grey eyes! As for your heroes, I thought one sounded like Clark Gable! I do appreciate that the male characters are subtle in their handsomeness, not brawny hulks all. Here's hoping you enjoy my comments. Sincerely, Susan

Thank you for a very good read! I sat down and finished "No Man's Mistress" in one day. I enjoyed it thoroughly and think that it's among your best. The subplot that involves Viola's past is something that really changes the whole character of the plot -- adding a lot of depth. The question I have is: My mom, who is also a great follower of yours although she can barely read now due to macular degeneration, says that she thinks that your last two books are "re-hashes" --books you wrote before, but have expanded and improved. I don't think so. Who is right? Again, thank you for your hard work -- your stuff is definitely on my "keeper" list. Janet

Something about it "called" to me and I copied it down. Thought you might be interested. What is longing made from? What cloth is put into it that it does not wear out with use Gold wears out, and silver wears out Velvet wears out, and silk wears out Yet longing does not wear out The moon rises and the sun rises The sea rises in vast waves But longing never rises from the heart (Welsh - 17th century) I found it so interesting that my favorite book of yours and this poem have the same title and Welsh association.

Dear, dear Ms. Balogh: I simply had to write again, because a few minutes ago I finished another great novel, LONGING. This is such a good story on so many levels. I'm glad it doesn't have a romance-y cover (in spite of the 'step-back'), because it is so much more. It came near to having one of those endings (like Jack and Belle or Sophie and Nathaniel) that comes dangerously close to being sad, BUT is saved by these important lines:"..they clung together, breathless with the realization of how close they had come after all to cowardice, to giving in to the fear of facing down the unknown...". That makes such a difference somehow. From reading the letter from Austria (below), I see that NO MAN'S MISTRESS has a similar situation with a heroine of lower social position than the hero (I will read this book soon, but I have THIEF OF DREAMS to read first). But nothing can beat your stories that take place in Wales. They have a completely different,REAL quality to them that is so intense. Your love of this place is palpable. They make me feel "hiraeth". This book is a classic. I also see in the letters below that many people are searching for backlist books like me. They are real treasures -- I will not give away my secret source for fear that all the Mary Balogh books will disappear from it! (It's in Florida, though!) Your books are all Keepers. P.S. I found a web site with a guide to Welsh pronunciation -- I'm getting very good at"ll" and "u" and "w"!

Dear Ms. Balogh: Thank you so much for many hours of enjoyable reading. I read one of your books for the first time this summer when I saw "More Than A Mistress" on the "New Arrivals" shelf at our local library. I immediately fell in love with your writing style, the unexpected twists and turns of plot development, and the charming way you have of creating a scene. I really admired the female character and liked how strong, wise and intelligent she seemed to be. That began an interesting journey of discovery for me as I began the quest for more of your novels. I've scanned the list of available books in the library computer and have eagerly read all that they have. I just finished "Dancing with Clara", which I had to get in a large print special edition. I've even resorted to contacting Putnam Publishing to obtain "Thief of Dreams", another delightful book that I couldn't put down. Thank you for your consistently well thought out characters and plots. I really enjoy reading your stories. I look forward to your latest novel, "No Man's Mistress", which I understand has just been published. Jeanne Eisenhut

Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your novels. I started out with the historicals and am now "glomming" your backlist of regencies and anthologies. I am doing quite well (I only need about 20 more) as I check out used bookstores wherever I travel. Have you ever looked at eBay? - your books are very popular and some of the older regencies are selling for very high prices (The Wood Nymph went for $45US in Sept!) It is tempting, but I won't part with mine! I am looking forward to your new historicals to be released and am hoping for the reissue of your regencies. (Oh, oh - there goes the fun on eBay!)

Dear Mary Balogh! I enjoy your books for many years now, and I find both your willingness to handle darkness and difficulty in a believable way and your willingness to "take on" imperfect heroes and heroines (like Gerald in A Precious Jewel) very special. Thank you for much reading pleasure. With No Man's Mistress I had a lot of difficulty with the ending, which seemed "sugoarcoated" to me. The Regency era, always portrayed as populated by all those high sticklers and all those girls who were ruined for being alone in the garden for a little while with a stranger, does seem like an unrealistic setting for society's acceptance of the heroine. I would have found the couple accepted by the family (which was too easy and casual in my eyes, as well - some thought about the moralities involved, some introspection by the ladies before just opening their family circle would have made it much more meaningful, in my eyes), and maybe not shunned at some small events organized by the Duke more believable, and it seemed like a copout, or a fairytale, the way that book ended. I would be very interested in your comments, because I may not know enough about the Regency, being only a romance reader in that field, not a historian, and anyway, I like your books a lot, I found both the hero and the heroine very special, and their internal conflict well done, so I am looking forward to clarifying that bit for me, as well. All the best, Lisa

Dear Mrs. Balogh, You are my very favorite romance author! You must hear this frequently...but I must say "thank you" for giving me so many hours of great reading! I was so excited to see that you have moved to Dell and they have published your last two manuscripts in beautiful hardcovers. Your work deserved to be in hardcover from the very first one. I am an aspiring romance author and have been writing for the last two years. I've completed my first work and have sent it to a contest to get some feedback. I am interested to learn if you are ever planning any lectures/writing classes anywhere in the US especially on the east coast. I noticed you might come to NY to produce an audio recording of your last book. Or, do you have any lectures you have done "on tape" for purchase? Thank you again for writing all your wonderful books. I think my favorite is, "Irresistible" (but maybe because the heroine shares my first name!) or "The Secret Pearl." But is hard to pick a favorite, as you have never let a reader down with any of your novels! My father, who died last year, told me you were his favorite along with Georgette Heyer and Jane Austen and I must concur! Best, Sophia Nash Ours

Now they are unavailable, or if I find any, the price is greater than it was originally! Do you know of any sources where I can buy or trade used paperbacks online? (P.S. - I know you have a lot of projects lined up, but would you please consider writing one more Horsemen book -- after all, 4 horsemen : 4 stories, right? And, I really think that Eden and Lavinia got very short shrift in Irresistable. They are a fascinatingly different couple, with strong personalities, one of which is probably jaded with so much casual sex and the other with no experience at all (and such a strong Women's Libber for the early 19th century!)! And both kind of stubborn and both finding "I love you" so difficult to say. I know you could go to town with THEM! And it would be so nice to see the Horsemen ALL settled happily and appreciative of the love they have in their lives. Plus, we would really enjoy their delightful bantering whenever they are all together. How about it? Please?)

I just have to write again, even though I wrote last week (apparently on the day of the tragedy in New York). After searching used book stores in three cities(!), I managed to collect all 3 Four Horsemen books! I just finished the last one, and I must say that those guys (even Kenneth)are the most delightful, endearing and (when they're together)funny gentlemen I've met since Friday's Child (Miss Heyer). Nathaniel was my favourite and the character of Sophie was perfect for him. I adored this book UNTIL Sophie rejected him, EVEN THOUGH he had been her champion! It was so upsetting for him to be so hurt and then to not see her again for three months! They went through so much pain within themselves and it took so long for them to clue in about each other's feelings, that the brief ending was (for me) very anticlimactic and didn't heal or make up for all the heartbreak. There just had to be more to than that! I literally felt bereft when it was over. And, considering it was supposedly the end of the Four Horsemen, I really would have liked to have had them all together at the end, so we can know that their deep friendship will go on all their lives. I'm sorry, but I want to know that Nat and Sophie are gloriously happy in their marriage, so that the bad stuff they went through is balanced out (you know, Yin-Yang etc.) As your other reader said about another book, "It ended too soon!" I feel better getting that off my chest ... also I will immediately start a new story to help me get over it! I hope you can tell from all this that I LOVE your books and wouldn't want you to think I'm criticising. Rather I'm expressing a plea for help! I love those guys!

My first one of yours was Heartless (and thank heaven my library also had Silent Melody to follow it with!). I loved The First Snowdrop, but wept alot during Christmas Belle. I really hope that Lily will prove not to be barren (I am sure her Spanish captor was sterile!!)and we will see the fruits of her and Neville's union before their sequels are finished. Please?

Dear Mary, You must know that one published book a year is not enough for your fans. Can you persuade your publisher to let you produce books like the Signet Regencies? I am assuming they are a little easier to write because they are shorter.??..therefore more may be written in a year's time. Hope I am not coming off like a slave-driver but it has been bleak between books...Keep up the great work...sincerely, Frances.

Mary, I really loved "No Man's Mis- tress".I bought last Thursday(8/8/01), after being called by the bookstore the day before.I loved Ferdinand&Viola.I really loved the twist you put in the story. After having read "MTAM",I was sure that Ferdie was "experienced" so to speak.I also loved the glance at Jo- celyn&Jane after four years of marriage, I loved how Jane revealed that she&Joce- lyn loved to spend an afternoon or two at "the house".Why was I not surprised at Lady Heyward's not being shocked at that revelation, only upset that Jane had never told her.Which brings me to some- thing else,I would give anything to read Angeline's story, she kept revealing a glimpse or two in both books. Now their story sounds like it would be very in- teresting indeed.Am looking forward to the sequel to "One Night For Love".Have a nice time in Wales. What can anyone say to the producer of some of their best daydreams-PLEASE keep on writing so I may keep on dreaming. In this all too real world, happy endings just do not exist-moments, yes-but happy endings only by Balogh. Your historicals are very good, but your regency's soar. Their haven't been any lately, please, plese don's stop writing them. Bless you and your vivid mind and romantic heart. Barbara

Dear Mary, I adore your books! They have entertained and thrilled me. It has taken me years to collect just 20 of your regencies. Most people must be like me ... they must horde them. Considering your popularity, I'm surprised that they don't re-issue your books. They are difficult to find both in used bookstores and on-line. I just finished reading More than a Mistress. It was wonderful! I'm looking forward to reading No Man's Mistress when it comes to paperback. By the way, I found the cover art to be both elegant and eyecatching. If you have any suggestions about how to aquire your signet regencies, please get back to me. Do you still write signet regencies? I look forward to hearing from you. Lisa Sebelle

Dear Ms. Balough, It astounds me that you are able to be as productive as you are, keep up an interesting website AND stay admirably abreast of your email traffic. One part of my attraction to Regencies is certainly my strong Luddite tendencies. Every time a Regency features a subplot involving the smashing of mechanical looms, etc., I secretly cheer and imagine my computer going up in smoke. On a different side of technological innovations during this period, many Regencies often mention improved stoves being installed into the households of enlightened landowners (or by enlightened landowners wives and housekeepers). Am I correct in infering that prior to the use of stoves, households would have been getting along using open fires, pits, spits and dutch ovens? So would an improved stove be something like the Franklin stove (or some kind of stovepipe stove)? Or would it be one adapted to the use of coal (or is that Georgian/Victorian?)? One by-product of the period would have to be acute respiratory difficulties from wood or coal smoke (imagine all those poorly drawing chimneys), linked with the cold, damp climes, crowded households without adequate healthcare (t.b., colds, flus, bronchitis, etc. running rampant) and inadequate clothing (surely ladies weren't fluttering around in muslins and shawls all year round?)--no wonder ladies were dying left and right.

Dear Mary Balogh: Your books have place of honor on my shelves and are dog-earred from re-reading. I found The Temporary Wife at a used bookstore, and have loved your books since then. My favorites are The Notorious Rake, The First Snowdrop, Tangled, the Web Series, and The Secret Pearl, although each book is a treasure. I loved More Than a Mistress and am looking forward to No Man's Mistress. Thank you for giving me so many wonderful hours of reading enjoyment.

I have just finished reading "More Than a Mistress" and loved it. I have read all of your books that I can find. They are my favorites. This book was a little different from the others but it was fascinating to read and wait to find out what happened between "Jane" and "Jocelyn". I know that all your books have happy endings and I look forward to seeing how you make that happen.

8/6/01 The bookstore called me 2 pm Sat to tell me "No Man's Mistress" had arrived. I raced to town and was home reading it by 3:30. Unfortunately, I had plans for the evening so I had to take a break, but I came home at 11 PM and by 4 am had it done! Oh, Mary, you always have surprises in store for the reader. What delightful twists and turns. You have another winner! Thank you. P.S. Do you have a cure for dark shadows under the eyes for happy but tired readers?

Hello, My introduction to you was through More Than A Mistress. I just happened to borrow the book from the library and I was thrilled. I read it and a friend of mine read it before it was due to be returned. In returning to the library, I tried to get as many of your books as I could. Unfortunately, there were only two that I could find, one of which is One One Night For Love. I usually do not buy books until after I've read them because I enjoy rereading my books. However, I'm ordering No Man's Mistress so I can have it as soon as it is available. I guess you can gather by now that you have a new fan. I am looking forward to reading your your new books and catching up on the old ones. Thank you, so much, for many hours of reading pleasure. Dahlia
