I just finished reading More Than A Mistress (in about three and a half hours) and feel as though I've struck gold! I picked it up on the New Fiction shelf at my public library, and thought that if Susan Elizabeth Phillips could rave about you, then I'd better see what all the talk was about. Thank you for a wonderful book and for giving me another author whose work I will probably devour. I look forward to searching out your past works and anticipating the future.

I started to read your books when my husband was posted with the R>A.F. to Goose Bay in Labrador. Now thanks to on-line ordering I can buy them in U.K. not just on infrequent trips to the U.S.A. We had 1 or 2 in the local library but you are very difficult to find in U.K. Thankyou for many hours of reading pleasure.

I've stopped on your site at least a dozen times but never knew what to say. I finally realized that I just have to say what so many other readers have said. I treasure your stories and really look forward to reading more of your creations. For much of my reading material, I buy from a used book store but I usually have to go to a retail store for your books, as not many are turned in for resale. So thank you for sharing your talent with me. Finally, I'm looking forward to reading your future books.

Every Christmas, I re-read your Christmas novels, in particular, Christmas Belle, my second-favourite of your novels, and Christmas Bride. They are so good that each time I enjoy them as if it were the first time. I have read romance novels since 1973, when I was a teenager. I appreciate that now many of the heriones are mature women, like me. I hope you will continue writing for many years. Merry Christmas.

Dear Mary, I enjoy your regency stories very much and have, I believe, most of your books includung your latest, More than a Mistress. I really love your regency stories but cannot seem to find another after The Last Waltz (Signet). You used to bring one out around Christmas time and I have been searching but have had no luck. Have I missed one? I wish you all the best for the Christmas season and 2001. Sincerely Pat Lockey

INDISCREET has always been one of my favorites, and I just wrote a review of it for www.newandusedbooks.com. I thought you might enjoy one sentence in particular: "Rarely does a full-length novel combine the bold passion of an epic with the quiet humor, knowing detail, and elegant manners of an old-fashioned Regency." And Clarissa and Claude are just as interesting as Rex and Catherine!

Thank you for the many wonderful hrs. of travelling into what is surely a simpler time w/out the tech-stress of today. Oh,yes! Dear Mary, It's been a very long time since I felt compelled to write an author and tell her how much I loved her book. I LOVED "More Than a Mistress"! It's particularly unusual for me since I've avoided Regencies and historicals for the last few years -- like the plague. I was strictly Ms. Contemporary Romance, but I'm eager now to find your other books. And I can't wait for Ferdinand's story! Do you have a publication date? I loved your storytelling, the dialogue, the characters, the sex. Jane and Jocelyn are wonderful! He is such a snob. She is such a smart-mouth (him, too). He is so vulnerable. She is so smart. What a combination! "Oh, is that you, your grace? I had quite forgotten you were here." "... I so rarely have the opportunity to take tea with a former employee." ZING! I'm a voracious reader but it's been a long time since I enjoyed a book as much as I enjoyed "More Than a Mistress." Thank you for a great read, and a great deal of reading pleasure. I read constantly, and the other day I was suffering for a Regency "fix." I can "go without" for long periods of time, and read mysteries, contemporary romance, current best sellers, etc., but every so often I need the escapism of a well written regency -- and they're really not that easy to find, usually lumped together with other romances. Having taken an early retirement and consequently on a very limited budget, I use the public library a lot -- and lo and behold! --this day I walked in to find your hardcover More than a Mistress in the new arrivals. You saved my life!

Hi there, I had written you in the middle of September, and I do believe that your guestbook devoured my message. That was not well done of it (big grin)! I do enjoy your books tremendously, and I wish the National Library Service for the Blind recorded more of them. In September, I had read the Gilded Web, only to find out that there were two books attached to it. The two books, of course, are out of print, and so, I am left not knowing what happened to the characdters. I was wondering how one can obtain those books. The NLS told me they did not record out of print books, so I am wondering if your books will be reprinted in the near future, or if there is a way to get a hold of the two books so that I can scan and read them. I would really like to know what happened. I think it's a shame that the books are out of print. You do write such wonderful books! I can't wait for the day that books can be bought and downloaded off of the Internet. That way, I can read them using my talking computer and be happy as a clam before it gets out of the water and into the frying pan! Thank you for reading this message, and I do truly hope that the guest book does not become rabbid again and eat up my message for breakfast.

Thank you so much for all of your wonderful books! I can't tell you how deeply some of them have affected me -- the characters and situations are so real even though they are set in another place and time. I wondered what life experiences make a person so understanding of and sensitive to our human needs and emotional pain. I have never written to an author before, but I looked for your website and read your personal notes about yourself. I was not disappointed -- I found the person is as intriguing as her books. Sorry to add another entry so soon to my last one - but after reading some of the other letters I thought people might be interested in yet ANOTHER web site I have found. www.newandusedbooks.com has an enourmous amount of Mary Balogh books, both new and used. It states the condition and the price of the book - most of which are under $10.00 and some are priced under $5.00. I know this won't help the woman who asked for places to buy that aren't on the internet. But for her if you ask your local bookstore - they will order almost anything for you! The more people out there buying or requesting Mary Balogh books the better!

Mary - I wanted to thank you so much for alerting me to the Hunger Site, I sent that same information to about 50 of my friends, family and co-workers hoping that they would be interested enough to participate on a daily basis. After about a month I became aware of the Rainforest Site, then late this summer of the Kids Aids site, and finally during the last month of the Children's Health Site and the Breast Cancer Site. All these sites are from the Greater Good.Com and I can only say that if it wasn't for you I wouldn't be aware of any of them, or been able to particpate so easily (with a click of my mouse) in helping. I obtained a copy of your current book and have enjoyed it immensely. Can't wait for it's sequel next year. I have so many favorites of yours - The Temporary Wife, Lord Carew's Bride, Heartless, and the Berkeley series (which I just reread). I just feel so good when I get through reading one of your books. Thank you for so many hours of pleasure.

The last time I visited your web site I did not read the personal information you shared about yourself and your family. Today when I stopped in again I learned many new things and appreciate your sharing your journey to the destination of my author...ess! of choice with me. I want to tell you one thing I often tell my family and friends who sometimes comment on the books I read. I read many different topics and works but when I read for pleasure you are tops on my list. I am not the best grammer user and often am spelling challenged. The problem with that is I still have a lot to say and realize I have these communication shortfalls. When I read one of your books I know a person with a concern for entertainment with excellence in language usage has been at work. You have helped me, an adult who earns a living and has a diploma, use better grammer and to recognize authors and editors who do not care and only perform in the contex of one more book to sell. How proud your family must be. Thank you for responding to my last message. I am saving it...a message from Mary Balogh!!! How great.

I too have had difficulty finding your older titles, and I'm very happy to hear that Bantam Dell is looking at them. With the amount of junk published monthly, you'd think Dell would be smart to put out something that there is an assured market for. Dear Mary. I just got my first computer, and my friend Peggy Miller (who is also a great fan) has taught me how to e-mail. I loved your new book. But that is not surprising. I have every book (but one) that you've written, and just thinking about them makes me determined to start rereading them yet AGAIN1 When is the new sequel due? Keep on writing! Love, Linda

I just finished More than a Mistress, and can't tell you how much I enjoyed it. I think that I have read you complete backlist, many of them again and again. Your writing always gets to the heart of your characters. I came to the site to see what is next!! I am delighted that other works are in the works, as it were. I have mentioned before that I am an aspiring writer, although too busy lately to do more than dream about it, but I find you to be a worthy model and measure. Please, keep writing! I do miss the Signets (sigh), and all those wonderful families that went on and on.

Dear Ms. Balogh, I finished reading Tangled and I must say that it was absolutely wonderful and brought a few tears to my eyes which does not happen to me very often. (You being the only author able to do this and my favorite). I have read all of your books that I have been able to get my hands on and loved them all and your lastest was no exception. My favorites being The Secret Pearl and Tangled. You really know how to touch on the emotions when writing and make each character seem so very real and stay with you long after having finished reading the book. Keep up your excellent work. I look forward to reading your next release and some of your older books that are so hard to find.

Dear Mary, I have just finished More Than a Mistress. I'm happy to see you are writing Ferdinand's story, but I found myself more interested in Angeline and Heyward. I think their story would make a good prequel. What I like most about your books are how distinctive your characters are. Most romance authors vary their plots, but their male and female leads are interchangable from one book to the next. I also like the very strong period sensibility in your books. I like historicals because I want to read about other times and sensibilities. I don't want to read about a 21st century person in the 19th century--if I did I would read contemporary novels. Keep it up! Sincerely, Michele

I have long wanted to tell you that "Tangled" is still one of the best stories I have ever read. I have even reread it several times. I have never gotten so emotionally caught up in a story or with its characters. I realize that there is no possibility of a sequel to it, but I keep reading and hoping another one of your books will touch me almost as much. So far, "Deceived" is the only one that has come close. This is by no means meant as criticism of your newer titles, as they have been an enjoyable read. I guess I just identify with your older titles. Thank you for writing such wonderful "keepers".

Your stories of Wales, Truly and Longing, encouraged me to visit North Wales as part of an Elderhostel trip this summer. I found it to be a beautiful country. The book I enjoyed very much was Secrets of the Heart which I lent to some one and never got it back. I continue to search used book sales and flea markets to add to my collection but would really like to see some of your earlier books re printed.

Dear Ms. Balogh I am a devoted fan. I simply love your writing. Each book touches me in a special way. I have been a romance fan since my early teens, and have read many authors. You are the best. Two years ago, on a train trip from Wolf Point, MT to Savannah, GA, your novel Heartless, was one of the books I stuck in my bag to read. It was perfect. The story, the characters, the setting. All wonderful. Ever since then, I have been collecting your novels. I have not read one that I haven't been touched by. I just wanted you to know how wonderful I find your stories. Someday, I hope to collect them all. And I have a dream of writing my own story some day - actually, I have for many years, since I started reading - and your stories make that dream rekindle when it starts to fade. I appreciate your writing so, much, I just wanted to let you know. Thanks Stacy P.S. Thanks for explaining how to pronounce your name. I have always wondered, and to tell you the truth, I had been pronouncing it incorrectly. Now I know!

You are one of a very few romance authors whom I am willing to read any more. Most of what is marketed is drek (a technical term, you know), but your work is consistent and wonderful--your characters' motivations and actions are believable, your dialogue is fluid, and your plotting is a satisfying blend of the inevitable and the completely surprising. I hope you continue writing into your 80's!

Congratulations on "More Than a Mistress." I thought it was a phenominal book, one of your absolute best. I was reading through the reviews on Amazon, and was surprised to see a few negative ones. (Did they read the same book I did???). Anyway, I wrote a five star review for you (under the title "Romance Readers Rejoice") and I wanted to thank you personally for not abandoning the romance genre and your romance readers. When I heard that you were coming out with a hardback, I groaned out loud. It seems that almost all of the finest romance writers abandon the romance genre as soon as they make it in hardback, and switch to murder/mystery/suspense. It's almost as if romance isn't prestigious enough for hardback. I find this extremely frustrating-- shouldn't love be more prestigious than murder and violence?! I greatly admire your writing and its unfailing emotional intensity, and have been an avid fan since your very first book. I wait impatiently for Ferdinand's story, and I would love to hear more about the sexy Viscount Kimble as well!! Thank you very much for the many hours of reading enjoyment you have given me over the years.

The love scenes were just so touching - What I really liked was even though you went into detail which is fine since we're all adults here but you just made the scenes so sexy and romantic too - not distastful. I can't wait for the next book on Ferdinand. I also think you should backtrack and do one on their sister. She is quite a character with her funny bonnets and her husband who loves her inspite of her clothes and how she threatens the brothers not to get killed but at the same time wants them to fight for the family's honor. You have to write about her too! You can backtrack for her can't you? Thanks for so much enjoyment. Maureen

Being both a librarian and a "book person", I participate in discussions more than the average reader. I never miss one dealing with any of the romance genres. For regency, Jane Austin, Georgette Heyer are, of course, cited. When the modern writers are mentioned, Mary Balogh is often proposed as the best of the current writers in the historical/regency genre. And the reaction is ALWAYS enthusiastic agreement. Thank you for your work.

The genre is one of my favorites but your character development and smooth writing style really sets your books apart from the pack. I am constantly amazed and impressed with the way you can make me hate someone in one book then turn it around and have me sympathizing with them in the next - and in less then 250 pages or so. Congratulations on your first Hardcover. I'm sure it won't disappoint. Any smaller Regencies on the your Horizon?

Your approach to the issues of " freedom of choice" for the heroines is refreshing and wonderfully subtle. I also really like the way you have of capturing " family " . THe character of "Freddie" a while back .. was especially dear. So, I was particularily pleased to hear that you have another big, noisy family knocking on the door of your imagination. I will look forward to them as they unfold. Your Neighbour in Calgary Lesley Fenton

BOOKSELLER & FAN BEGS HELP! I am a bookseller for Borders in Murray, UT, with an obsession for romance. I actually started working part time there because my husband said I should just get paid for all the hours I spent there. I have done a lot with the romance area, enlarged it, created permanent displays, made their presence known on the mass market table and we have seen great results so far. My Romance Book Club has gone better then anyone had expected with 12 members and 8 regulars. Now here I am today writing to you in search of some advice and perhaps assistance. Just for the record, my sister in law got mem hooked on your books years ago. I have been a fan for quite a while and Silent Melody put you over the top for me. You are a fabulous writer who has afforded me many hours of enjoyment. I thank you! Now for that dreadful business stuff. My latest and biggest project is our upcoming Romance Fair. It is October 14th and we have a fun day planned with signings, author panel, tarot card reader, knights fencing, costume contest, glorious pastries, etc. I would love any suggestions or advice you might have on what works and what doesn't with these events. I will admit to being a bit of a newbie, only a year of bookselling and this is the first big romance event (but not the last). I have the drive, I just need a bit of directional assistance sometimes. We are also planning a raffle of autographed book baskets with proceeds to go to two charities near and dear to me, Primary Children's Medical Center, their language and literacy development program and the YWCA Battered Women's Shelter. I love this idea but I am having a problem getting moving on it as I'm not real sure where to go from concept to actuality. We would like to do 5 big baskets, 4 for the raffle and one for a teacher on Teacher Appreciation Day the following weekend. We will include coffee, mugs, chocolates and whatever other fun things we can throw in. The raffle will start September 9th, with the drawing at the Romance Fair. But now how do I get lots of authors to help me out with their autographed books? Do I ask them to donate outright as many as they can afford to? Do I offer them postage paid mailers? We will of course include the authors who donate on our promotional materials and such as well as a display of all those who donated that will be up for the month. Keep in mind you are on my dream list. If you are ever in the area I would love to host a signing for you. You just need let me know what I need to do and I'll set it all up :-) Lastly, for now anyway. If you have a promotional type mailing list would you add me to it? PLEASE. I have had a time getting promotional materials, authors of course have been great but I just don't have time to contact everyone. If you would include me on your list it would be most appreciated. The address and information is below. We have a couple other fun things going on including a mailing list and monthly romance newsletter. I am having the time of my life with all of this. I realize how very busy you are and completely understand if you are unable to take the time to respond, I will not be offended in the least. If you are able to take a few moments I will be profoundly grateful. All my best! Gail Stordahl-Brown Borders Books & Music 132 E. Winchester Murray, UT 84107 e-mail: Corp01@aol.com

Dear Mary Balogh, This is the first fan letter I have ever written in my life. I just wanted to thank you for the last fifteen years of pleasure that I have had reading and rereading your books. I went from Georgette Heyer to you. I searched the web for your website because I hadn't seen anything lately from you and was worried that you had stopped writing. I'm so excited about More Than a Mistress. I believe that I do have almost everything that you have written. The original price was much less expensive back then. I would be rather hard-pressed to pick my favorite story. I'll just have to reread all of them to make a valid judgement. Thanks once again for all the pleasure. Sincerely, Cheryl Cheger-Timm

I have been reading One Night For Love, and I just love it. I was going to wait until I finished it to write, but these days it takes me several days to finish a book. It used to just take one (pre kids!!). The characters are so real, and I appreciate several things about this plot. Neville's love for Lily is not hidden, Lily is a cerebral thinker, Lily thinks through the relationship, and doesn't let passion sway her, and the 2 of them have an honest relationship and are kind to one another. I will definitely check out your "backlist", and this time I will support you and your work by buying the new hardcover, instead of finding it at my local library. Thank you for an intelligent plot line and for characters I'm anxious to read about.

I read Georgette Heyer and Barbara Cartland when I was younger (back in the 60's), but was disappointed with the lack of "spice" in the stories. I gave up on Regency's. After reading yours I find they have filled and surpassed that requirement for me, and I am now hooked. I have been acquiring your backlist over the past few years and feel pretty caught up, so I am really looking forward to your next release. With the exception of some of the anthologies, I believe that I have every one of your books. You have been an autobuy for me almost from the begining of your career. My only problem has been finding them as they came out since this is not the most Regency-friendly town around. I have recently talked two of my e-mail friends into trying your books and one is already hooked. I am having a ball trying to find some of the older books for her. The other friend has a couple of your books but she doesn't have the related books and won't start these until she does. She has asked what my favorite book is and there is no way I can decide that. I love almost all of them and those that I don't love I still like. I am looking forward to your new book in September. Thank you for all the years of wonderful reading. Paula

Hi Mary, I discovered you only one year ago, but I like your books so much, that I bought your recent books, and began looking for the OOP ones online. The more I read, the more I want. Today I have all your books except one, and half the antologies. I love all the Christmas stories, large or short and between my favorites are "The Notorious Rake", "Lord Carew´s Bride", "Dancing with Clara", "A precious Jewel", "Heartless", "the Gentle Conquest"; well I like all of them. There is one place that I can recommend where I found many of them, even some of the difficult ones at a fair price: rereadables.com . I am now impatiently waiting for the new one to be released, but I have a question, I believed that it will be Lauren story, now I see that the heroine name is Jane. You are going to give Lauren her own book, aren´t you?. Of course, I don´t need to say that all your books are keepers for me. I always love regencies, and before finding you, I was a little disapointed with most of the ones I get (In the anthologies I picked because of your name, now I found some other authors I like, but your stories are the best of all).

I have been reading the romance genre for several years. Yours is by far the very best. Your concepts are original, and the stories are so well told. I have a difficult time putting down one of your books once I start reading. There was one line in Tangled that surprised me so I was late for an appointment because I had to find out how you solved the situation. It was Julian appearing suddenly when he was thought dead. So far I have every book you have published except for five of the old ones. Do you have copies of any of your older books? You have spoiled me for other authors! Keep up the good work.

I have just finished reading One Night For Love, and I am obsessed with the lack of finality. What happened to Lauren? I thought for sure that Joseph and she were going to end up together! She was such a strong, vital character and you left her hanging. She did not submit to fate graciously, nor did she rebel. I realize that you have left a convenient opening for another novel, but I am dying here. I rarely take any time out anymore for reading other peoples work, my own seems to absorb my every thought. But your storytelling ability kept my imagination piqued beyond the norm. I realize that you probably get thousands of know-it-alls criticizing you constantly, so please do not receive this message with irritation. I just wanted to drop you a line, to hopefully discover what you had originally intended for her. 100,000 words can either be a veritable blessing or a wretched curse! I can sympathize.

It is bright and sunny today, June 9 and it is 3:50 pm. I just want you to know that I love your books. I have just about all of them. My sister lives in California and she helps me by going to used books stores. I think I have just 10 more books to find. That has been fun. The first book I bought was Irrestible and I fell in love with the people. After collecting all your single story books I am going to start collecting the books you wrote with others. I think those are great stories and my favorite is "The Substitute Guest." Thanks for writing such great light hearted books.

Of course, I do not copy other people work, but I admit that my first book was influenced in some ways by yours. I look forward to reading many more of your works. Thank you for your time. Roberta.

Hello! I am a most sincere fan of your work, especially the shorter Regency novels. Some months (a year or so?) back I read that some of your earlier books were to be re-printed abroad if not in the US. I would love to know where and when - and how someone in the States could get in contact with a bookseller that would sell them via mailorder? Everyone needs a little romance in their lives is my motto - but the time limits placed on my reading time by work and family responsibilities have taught me to read very few books "cold." I go first to my favorite authors and then to those recommended by friends whose taste seems similar to my own... I have read and re-read your novels (when in doubt or when I know I have only limited time, I would rather re-read an old favorite than experiment with a totally unfamiliar author!) but, unfortunately I did not discover you until several of your earliest books were no longer available. (Even worse than not finding some of your books at all is checking out some of those out-of-print books from a library, falling in love with a set of characters and then discovering that some unscrupulous person has stolen that copy when I try to go back to re-read it!) I look forward to your new releases and am so pleased for you that you will be published in hardback editions - although I enjoy the convenience of paperbacks, I also love the feel and permanence of hardbacks. Besides, I take it as a sign that your work is being taken more seriously - as well it should.

Sadly your books are not available in Australia (at least nowhere I have looked). Luckily I have Amazon to feed my addiction to your writing. Looking through your website, I now know why reading your books makes me feel that I am with friends. Frederica was also the first book by Georgette Heyer I read (and still my favourite though A quiet gentleman comes pretty close) and I went on to devour all of them too. Jane Austen is also a favourite as is Grisham. Please keep writing - I promise to keep reading!

Hello, Mary. I have been a fan so long I believe I may have purchased your very first copy ever sold! Maybe not...Needless to say, I have been enjoying your stories for a long time. I have read over some of your messages and felt compelled to add my two cents worth...I am sure you get "guidance" all the time! I am not a supporter of the re-written previously published stories. This is especially true with your stories for I think you put alot of effort in perfecting the stories the first time published. Usually, I find the rewritten sections of the re-released stories drag along rather than add to the flow....(That sounds more like a dime's worth rather than 2 cents!) One other thing: I am intrigued with how you can take a not-so-likable character in one story and make them a hero/heroine to sympathize with and even like in another story. My favorite of these is Lord Edmond Waite. I was just wondering if you could possibly pull off a story about Lady Dorothea Page which make us feel sympathy for her without jeopardizing our new-found sympathy for Lord Edmond? I look forward to your next book! PS - I am a speech therapist by training. I am impressed with how you portray characters with difficulties physically and verbally. Even Sir Gerald Stapleton's difficulty with reading and numbers was well-scripted. It must be your years in the schools!

Hi Ms Balogh, I just would like to say 'thank you' for all your wonderful books. I sincerely wish that there will be more to come in the near future. You are able to pull off extremely delicate situations with such finesse and panache. Furthermore, some of your plots have very contraversial issues. And I love your books simply because you deal with them. I admit that not all cater to my taste but then that makes your books even more precious. But most of all I love your sense of humour. Finally, I would like to make a little request. I would love you to autograph some of my books. I have most of them and in some cases extra copies. If I may be allowed to make one request: please have the heroines marry the hero before they have sex and get pregnant. You are wonderful at what you do!

Hi, I'm not sure if you remember me. I'm Chris's friend from Regina. I used to date Rob Doherty the guy who Chris used to play in a band with. We came out to Kipling and helped paint your house a long time ago. Anyway, I was just surfing the net and came across this, so I thought that I would type you a message saying hi! I hope that all is well with you. Take Care. Sam.

Hello: Well I just stopped by as I read a brief few lines of your personal page. I am an amateur Poet in Ont. Canada. I too had a sister 1 yr.2 mos. older than myself and we were almost like twins. Also, our mother's name was Mildred, but that's another story. I have a very inspirational true story to tell someone, which changed my life, a few years back. I am just bursting to write about it, and have it known to others who would I'm sure appreciate it. I am presently looking for a Publisher/Editor or whatever I need to do this. As I said I was an amateur, 1 poem is published and another called Miracle of Hope will be on the internet soon. Do you have any ideas as to where I could inquire about getting my story published? I commend you for your work, and wish I had started earlier in my life (however I didn't know I had a talent for writing until just 2 yrs. ago). Bye for now, Barb Richards, Northern, Ontario Canada

You will be able to see gorgeous new pictures of my gorgeous children and read an excerpt from my next book, MORE THAN A MISTRESS, which is due out as a Delacorte Hardcover in September, 2000. Definitely one of my best!

I've been a Mary Balogh addict for years now and have reread most works multiple times. Recently, I indulged in another journey through THE GILDED WEB and couldn't recall ever reading the follow up story about James Purnell and Madeline Raine. They were too intriguing to abandon, so please tell me where to find their story as I wait for the next and no doubt wonderful Balogh work.

After picking up one of your books in a second hand bookstore, I became a fan. I find your characters very believable and the story lines are always good. I believe the book I first read opening with a bad thunderstorm. The heroine was terrified of the weather and was comforted by an unknown gentleman. I don't recall the title but if you could provide it, I would be most appreciative. Thank you for your many many books! C.A. Wilke

I've been a fan of your writing since the beginning. In fact, I still have my copy of "A Masked Deception" that I bought back in 1985! A wonderful book, and still one of my absolute favorites, along with "A Precious Jewel" and "Irresistible." I recently re-read "Dark Angel" and wonderered whether you ever thought of fleshing out the romance of two of the supporting players in that book, Sir Albert Boyle and Rosalie Ogden. They seemed to be two characters deserving of a book of their own! Thanks for the lovely stories, and I look forward to your next book!

It's a pleasure to find a "message" area on your site. You are one of two "romance" authors whose books I ALWAYS buy, no matter the title, length, subject, setting, etc....as they NEVER disappoint. (The other is Laura Kinsale.) I have missed the Xmas stories that appeared for some years in the Signet Regency Xmas anthologies. I don't own all of your books, but NEARLY all, and I always grab any that are new to my library when I run across them in the used book stores that I haunt. One thing I especially like about your books is that they are so eminently re-readable....and I re-read them constantly, and wouldn't part with one of them for ANY price. Hope you are busy producing another of your longer novels. I'd be hard pressed to name a favorite, but two I especially liked are HEARTLESS and BEYOND THE SUNRISE. I'll be watching and waiting for your next work.

Dear Mary, You're my favorite author in any genre. As with many of your fans, I started reading Georgette Heyer in junior high and got hooked on Regencies. I'm only sorry that I didn't discover you until about 1990 so I have the usual problem of trying to fill in the earlier titles in my collection. My husband knows that if my nose is in one of your books, I'm not to be disturbed! I was wondering if you've ever read Heyer's "Beauvallet" (my favorite) and if you've ever considered doing an Elizabethan historical. I have to admit to a weakness for a hero who can buckle a swash... I think what I appreciate most about your work is the variety. Too many romance novelists (even some I really enjoy) write the same plots over and over again or reuse the same devices in different settings. You obviously work very hard to be fresh and as a result I find your characters individually memorable. Not having read all of your work yet, I can't give my final opinion, but I have particularly enjoyed "Dark Angel", "Longing", "The Trysting Place" and "The Notorious Rake". You do a really first rate job of giving your characters rational motivations. I really dislike a story where the whole conflict between the hero and heroine could be resolved by one simple conversation. Your work is always a pleasure to read (and reread). If at some point you do plan to reissue any of your early novels, you can count on my buying every one. Best Regards, Katie

I grew up reading Regencies and while I may write paranormal romances, the Regency has remained one of my favorite romance genres to read. When Zebra moved away from the larger format back to the short Regency I was disappointed, then I found your books! I'm an avid reader, and support my hobby by working a second job in my local Waldenbooks, but I find that even today there are only a small number of romance writers I can enjoy with any regularity. I'm pleased to say that you have been added to that group, and I'm looking forward to your next book.

I belong to a local writer's group who will be putting on another writer's retreat this fall. I was wondering if you do any workshops. We would love to have you join us to do one or two workshops on September 29, 30 and October 1, 2000 at Apex Ski Resort just outside of Penticton British Columbia. And I also see that your next book is The Rake's Mistress in June ? I love reading your books - but being Scottish could you hve some Scottish heros too. Keep up the good work.

How heartwarming to read on your website of the many others who have received as much pleasure from your books as I have. One person referred to you as a "word- smith". Another spoke of "your awesome gift". Mary Balogh, you are a teller of tales par excellence. We are all drawn into the magic of these stories by a master weaver of words. Your power is such that while reading your books, we are truly, for those moments, in another time and place, totally outside of our- selves. Your books are very sweet, and always leaves me with a huge sigh of content. Please keep writing proliferously as I always wait with baited breath, scanning the bookshelves for your newest novel! I think the reason I admire your books most is that you are the only writer I can think of who uses sex scenes correctly -- to show us things about the characters' minds and hearts that we couldn't have learned any other way. Many romances I've read wouldn't suffer a bit storywise if someone pushed the delete key on all the sex scenes. What you do is different and it must be difficult because nobody else does it so well! Another reason I admire you is because you said you couldn't get through Moby Dick either :)

Enjoy your work immensely! I find your characters interesting, complex and your books addictive. Usually I need a supply of kleenx at hand when I start reading one. I have all your books except for two: "The Wood Nymph" and "Gentle Conquest." The rest I have read or am in the process of reading. I will really miss your Signet Regencies. I especially enjoyed the series "Courting Julia", "Dancing with Clara" and "Tempting Harriet." Also among my favorites are: "An Unacceptable Offer" "Snow Angel," "The Counterfeit Betrothal", and "A Promise of Spring" (which I will now have to reread as I have the rest of the series finally!) I really hope that your previous work will be re-released so others who are just discovering you can enjoy your older work. Also it doesn't seem fair that they are going for such high prices on the used book Internet sites but you don't receive the benefit. All the best on your next project!
